Dr. Kathy Beard from VA Western Community College came and spoke to our potential dual enrollment students on January 31st! We have uploaded her presentation so that parents and students may access it. Dual Enrollment Presentation - Dr. Kathy Beard.pdf Dual Enrollment For the 2019-2020 school year, students have the option to take dual enrollment courses during their school day at VA Western Community College or Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. Students will receive a weighted high school credit for these courses, and can take any course that can be applied to a degree or certificate program.
Students will be responsible for knowing community college registration deadlines, registering themselves for their college courses, and paying tuition directly to the community college.

Students must work with their LB School Counselor to ensure they are on track to meet their BCPS high school graduation requirements. Failure to register for a course needed for graduation OR dropping a course without consulting with their School Counselor could result in not being able to graduate on time. Students who are taking dual enrollment classes either at LB or at the community college are responsible for meeting all requirements for their classes, including taking the VA Placement Test on the community college campus. Please refer to the registration night presentation that is posted in our Registration section for more information on which classes will be offered for dual enrollment at LB this school year. Payment for dual enrollment classes taken at the community college will be paid directly to the community college. Payment for dual enrollment classes taken at LB will be paid directly to LB.

We have outlined below the steps each student needs to take if they are planning on enrolling in a dual enrollment course at VWCC or DSLCC for next school year:

1. Meet with their LB School Counselor to discuss options of courses the student is planning on enrolling in.

2. Apply to the community college in which the student will be taking the course. If the student has already taken a dual enrollment course before, they are already part of the community college system and do not need to reapply.

3. If you have not already done so, take the VA Placement Test and provide your test results to your LB School Counselor before the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The VPT must be taken on the community college campus. Information can be found here: https://www.virginiawestern.edu/learning/testing/placement.php

4. Set up a meeting with an academic advisor at the community college to get enrolled in the dual enrollment course. This meeting is a mandatory step before students will be approved to take dual enrollment courses. Academic advisors are normally assigned by alphabet and their information can be found on the following websites:

VWCC: https://www.virginiawestern.edu/advising/index.php

DSLCC: https://www.dslcc.edu/student-services/academic-advising/

5. Bring the “High School Enrollment Approval Form” to your LB School Counselor after you meet with your Academic Advisor at the community college. This is a form we will need to sign and keep a copy of for our records. Once we have record of your enrollment in a dual enrollment course, we will build your high school schedule around that. Please see your LB School Counselor if you have any questions about getting enrolled in a dual enrollment course for next school year.
